Due to a minor conflict with my foot, I have been unable to produce three dimensional work and so on started drawing again. My main focus has been on geometrical shapes and what can be described as meta symbolism. The symbols themselves are powerful in each their own way, but are being put together in a riddle like way. This piece is called "Law and Reason" and refers to a quote in Stephen David Ross' book Injustice and restitution: the ordinance of time. The quote reads
"The age of injustice, older than time, belongs to time in the endless restitution justice pays for immemorial injustice. Law and reason represent some of the forms of this compensation. Madness suggests endless formlessness together with madness's order. Within the disorder of madness, where restitution may have no meaning, authority rules."
The piece was part of our start of year exhibition, a one night only show that was surprisingly good. It did serve the purpose as a kick start, and cancelled out the back to uni depression. My current dissertation research involves mapping of the use and necessity of madness in relation to all aspects of the art world as well as in the actual world. In that sense, this work is merely a depiction of my mind in the process of scratching yet another layer of filth off the crusty sore of humanity. However, the use of symbols and the geometric construction of the images, together with the presentation calls for an informal invitation to interpret the work as it is, a work in progress. Progression in recession. What a joke.
